EU Introduces Common AI Literacy Framework for European Schools

European Commissioner Roxana Minzatu announced the launch of a European AI literacy framework, created together with the OECD and CodeAI, to provide a common guide for teaching artificial intelligence in schools across the EU. The guide targets four learning areas – interacting with AI, creating with AI, managing AI systems and contributing to AI development – and calls for teacher training, suitable instructional resources and regular evaluation of implementation.

In Romania, the rollout faces challenges. The Ministry of Education has slated AI as an optional subject in 32 pilot high schools, but a national guidance document remains unfinished and is unlikely to be completed before the current government term ends. A study by NPR and Ipsos cited by Romanian analyst Mircea Șerdin shows that over half of teachers in the United States report AI tools eroding students' critical thinking, undermining trust and making assessment difficult. Romanian educators echo these concerns, warning that unchecked AI use could impair pupils' ability to think independently.

The combined developments highlight a continent‑wide push to embed AI knowledge in curricula while grappling with practical issues of teacher preparedness and the potential negative effects on critical thinking skills.
