EU Euro 7 standards expand regulations to include brake and tire abrasion
The European Union is implementing the Euro 7 standard, which expands vehicle regulations beyond traditional exhaust emissions. For the first time, the norm includes requirements for non-exhaust pollutants, specifically targeting particle emissions from brake and tire abrasion. This applies to all vehicles, including electric cars.
Key provisions of Euro 7 include stricter particle measurement ranges, expanding from 23 to 10 nanometers. While exhaust gas limits for passenger cars remain largely consistent with Euro 6, the regulation introduces new durability requirements. Manufacturers must demonstrate compliance for up to 160,000 kilometers or eight years, with additional provisions for vehicle longevity of up to ten years or 200,000 kilometers. For electric vehicles, the standard specifically addresses battery durability.
Additionally, the EU's End-of-Life Vehicle Regulation (ELVR) aims to improve circularity by mandating that vehicles be designed for easier disassembly and recycling. This includes mandatory recycled plastic quotas for new vehicles and increased manufacturer responsibility for the collection and recycling of old vehicles to ensure valuable raw materials remain in the economic cycle.
