EU issues first SAFE defense payments to Belgium and Czechia

The European Commission has issued the first payments from the SAFE defense loan instrument to Belgium and Czechia. Belgium received 1.2 billion euros, representing 15 percent of its 8.3 billion euro allocation, while Czechia received 309 million euros, which is 15 percent of its 2 billion euro total allocation.

To date, the Commission has provided nearly 13.5 billion euros in pre-financing to eleven Member States. The SAFE program is part of the ReArm Europe/Readiness 2030 plan, which aims to mobilize over 800 billion euros for defense investment across the European Union. The total credit facility for the SAFE instrument is set at up to 150 billion euros.

In Czechia, the funds are earmarked for military equipment, including Leopard 2 A8 tanks and Tatra T-815 vehicles, as well as investigating the military utility of the D11 highway. Other nations, such as Portugal, have secured significant portions of the fund—5.8 billion euros in Portugal's case—but are awaiting their initial disbursements.
