The European Commission has opened a tender for the construction of up to seven AI gigafactories, a programme valued at more than €30 billion. Public funding of up to €10 billion will be combined with private investment of roughly €20 billion. Each facility must house at least 100 000 modern processors and is intended to boost Europe’s high‑performance computing capacity, reducing reliance on overseas data‑centre infrastructure.

The EuroHPC Joint Undertaking is coordinating the procurement of compute time for the new centres. The call for proposals closes on 12 November 2026, and the first round attracted 76 declarations covering 60 potential sites in 16 EU countries. Medium‑scale projects will start with a minimum of 25 000 GPUs, expanding to 75 000 GPUs, with EU funding of €100 million per project in the first phase and up to €400 million in the second. Large‑scale projects will require at least 40 000 GPUs.

Poland is among the bidders, seeking to host an AI gigafactory on the Vistula River. The initiative aims to give Europe a sovereign AI compute infrastructure, supporting advanced model training and reducing dependence on US and Chinese super‑computing resources.
