EU launches first Screening Week to combat cardiovascular disease and diabetes

The European Commission, alongside three major scientific societies—the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD), and the European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO)—has launched the first-ever EU Screening Week. Led by European Commissioner for Health and Animal Welfare Olivér Varhelyi, the initiative aims to shift healthcare from a reactive model to one focused on early intervention.

The campaign, titled 'Know your numbers', encourages citizens to monitor critical health indicators such as blood pressure, blood glucose, and cholesterol levels. This effort addresses urgent health challenges in Europe, where cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death, accounting for 1.7 million deaths in 2022 and affecting roughly 62 million people. Additionally, diabetes affects 35.3 million individuals in the EU, and approximately one in six adults suffers from obesity.
