EU leaders demand urgent action against soaring energy prices

EU leaders at a Brussels summit have called for urgent, coordinated action to combat soaring energy prices that are impacting households and industry. Since late February, diesel prices in Europe have doubled, while natural gas prices have surged by approximately 140%. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen noted that the cost of imported fossil fuels has increased by 106 billion euros since the start of the conflict in the Middle East, despite no increase in energy volume.

To address the crisis, the Commission has proposed five short-term interventions: releasing 100 million barrels of oil and diesel under International Energy Agency management within four months, extending the temporary state aid framework for industries, postponing methane regulation obligations by one year, initiating a strategic dialogue to increase refinery capacity and efficiency, and strengthening the EU's joint energy procurement mechanism to leverage collective purchasing power.

While leaders emphasized the need for immediate relief, they also reaffirmed long-term commitments to the energy transition, renewable energy, and strategic autonomy to reduce dependence on volatile fossil fuel markets. Discussions also touched upon the reform of the EU emissions trading system and the need for a unified budget for 2028-2034.
