EU leaders pledge continued Ukraine support amid budget deadlock

At a two-day summit in Brussels, European Union leaders reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Ukraine and maintaining sanctions against Russia. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa emphasized that sanctions will not be lifted until Russia ends its war. The leaders also addressed Ukraine's request for at least 70 billion euros in additional financial and military aid for 2027.

Despite this unity on Ukraine, the summit concluded without a consensus on the EU's long-term budget for 2028–2034. Disagreements persist between member states regarding the size of the budget and the distribution of funds between cohesion and competitiveness. Additionally, leaders discussed new trade tools to counter unfair competition from China, with some suggesting the potential for blocking Chinese products from the single market.

Other key discussions included a coordinated response to the energy crisis and migration policy. While the EU remains a primary provider of aid to Kyiv, internal political pressures, such as Marine Le Pen's calls to reduce French contributions, present ongoing challenges to long-term financial stability.
