EU leaders to convene in Brussels for summit on economy and security
European Union leaders are scheduled to meet for a two-day summit in Brussels on 15–16 October to address critical economic and security challenges. Key priorities include rising energy costs, European competitiveness, migration, defense, and the bloc’s long-term budget for 2028–2034.
Economic stability is a central theme, with discussions focusing on the ‘One Europe, One Market’ initiative. This program aims to strengthen the internal market and reduce red tape, potentially saving EU businesses an estimated €37.5 billion by 2029. Leaders are also navigating significant energy price pressures; the European Commission reports that imported fossil fuels have cost an additional €100 billion as gas prices have surged.
European Council President António Costa has called for concrete outcomes, emphasizing the need for predictability and stability. The summit will also address geopolitical tensions involving Ukraine, the Middle East, and competition with China, particularly regarding the impact on European industries like the German automotive sector.
