Hungary: PM Péter Magyar pursues Orbán-era accountability

Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar is initiating a series of investigations and reforms to dismantle the political and economic structures established during Viktor Orbán’s 16-year rule. Following his Tisza Party’s landslide victory in April, Magyar has prioritized the recovery of state assets and the prosecution of former officials accused of corruption and abuse of power.

A significant development in this effort occurred with the arrest of György Matolcsy, the former Central Bank governor and former finance minister. Matolcsy is suspected of economic fraud, embezzlement, and the misuse of public funds through the establishment of foundations endowed with hundreds of billions of forints. His arrest follows audits revealing that past real estate investments were purchased at inflated prices, causing substantial financial damage to the bank.

On the diplomatic front, the new government is working to reintegrate Hungary into the European mainstream. This shift is marked by the upcoming visit of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa to Budapest for the 70th anniversary of the 1956 revolution. Unlike the previous administration, Magyar’s government has identified Russia as a security threat and supported EU accession negotiations for Ukraine. While Magyar has maintained a firm stance on restrictive immigration policies, his administration is actively seeking to restore the rule of law and resolve long-standing disputes with Brussels.
