EU mandates adaptive brake lights on new cars from July 2026

Starting 7 July 2026, the European Union will require all newly registered passenger cars to be equipped with an adaptive brake‑light system. Unlike conventional lights, the new system flashes rapidly when a vehicle travelling above 50 km/h performs an emergency brake, a signal shown to shorten driver reaction times by up to 0.2 seconds and reduce stopping distances by about 5.5 metres at 100 km/h. The rule is part of a broader safety package that also makes automatic emergency braking, lane‑keeping assistance, driver‑attention monitoring and intelligent speed‑limiters mandatory on new cars. Existing vehicles are excluded from retro‑fitting requirements.
