Polish police launch nationwide alcohol and drug road checks

From 19 to 21 June, police across Poland carried out a large‑scale “Alcohol & Drugs” marathon organised by the European Road Safety Police Organisation (ROADPOL). Officers used breathalysers and drug tests on highways, city streets and local roads. Drivers found with a blood‑alcohol level of 0.2‑0.5 ‰ face fines up to 2 500 zł, licence bans and, in serious cases, vehicle confiscation; higher levels are treated as criminal offences with possible imprisonment.

In a separate routine stop in Wrocław, a 21‑year‑old driver was caught with a falsified licence after a brake‑light check. Police said the offence can bring a fine of up to 30 000 zł and a driving ban of up to three years, with possible imprisonment for fraud.

Later, in Chełm, officers recorded speed‑limit violations on four drivers in one day. Each exceeded the urban limit by more than 50 km/h and received 1 500‑3 000 zł fines, 13 penalty points and temporary loss of their licences. The actions underscore a broader push to curb drunk, drug‑impaired and reckless driving in Poland.
