EU mandates driver‑monitoring systems for all new cars from July 2026

The European Union will require every vehicle receiving its first registration after 6 July 2026 to be equipped with advanced driver‑monitoring technology. The rule introduces the ADDW (advanced driver‑distraction warning) camera system that tracks head position, eye movement and gaze direction, issuing alerts when the driver’s attention lapses. It also makes the AEB‑PCD (advanced emergency braking for pedestrians and cyclists) mandatory, aiming to cut pedestrian and cyclist fatalities by up to 45 %.

These measures extend earlier ADAS requirements such as lane‑keeping assist, tyre‑pressure monitoring and electronic data recorders. The data from the driver‑monitoring camera is processed locally, with no external storage, addressing privacy concerns. The added hardware is expected to increase vehicle prices by €400‑€1,500, but the regulation applies only to new registrations, so existing cars are unaffected. The EU hopes the suite of systems will substantially lower road deaths caused by distraction, fatigue and inadequate braking response.
