EU mandates emergency stop signal on new cars from July 2026

The European Union will enforce a new safety requirement under Regulation 2019/2144 beginning 7 July 2026. All new passenger cars and light commercial vehicles sold in the EU must be equipped with an Emergency Stop Signal (ESS). The system makes the rear‑stop lights flash rapidly whenever a driver brakes abruptly at speeds above 50 km/h and the deceleration exceeds 6 m/s², alerting following traffic. The measure targets the high incidence of rear‑end collisions on European highways and is expected to shave about 0.2 seconds off reaction times, gaining roughly 4–5 metres of stopping distance at 80–100 km/h. Existing vehicles are exempt; the rule applies only to vehicles receiving their first registration after the July 2026 deadline. Car manufacturers have already begun integrating the system as part of a broader suite of advanced driver‑assistance technologies required by EU law.
