EU member states propose rethink of European Space Shield

Seven European Union member states—Germany, France, Austria, Belgium, Spain, the Netherlands, and Sweden—are calling for a fundamental redesign of the European Space Shield initiative. In a document obtained by Euronews, the group proposes a new space security architecture that focuses on protecting existing EU space systems while leaving the development of military space capabilities to national governments.

The signatories argue that the current initiative, introduced by Brussels in the Defence Readiness Roadmap 2030, lacks a clearly defined purpose and scope. They contend that the term ‘shield’ is misleading as it implies EU-led capability development, which they claim infringes upon national sovereignty. The group emphasizes that the responsibility for the procurement, operation, and defense of military space systems ‘lies exclusively with the member states.’

Rather than centralized EU development, these nations advocate for EU-wide coordination of procurement to integrate existing and emerging national programs while avoiding unnecessary duplication of efforts.
