EU-Mercosur trade deal to eliminate tariffs on 90% of EU products

The new trade agreement between the European Union and Mercosur, scheduled to take effect on May 1, 2026, is expected to create significant opportunities for European and Italian businesses. Alessandro Garbellini, head of the economic-commercial office of the Italian Embassy in Brasilia, stated that the deal will progressively reduce and eventually eliminate tariffs on more than 90% of EU products.

Key sectors poised to benefit include industrial machinery, pharmaceuticals, medical supplies, renewable energy, and agri-food technologies. Notably, the agreement will provide legal protection for 57 Italian geographical indications, strengthening the presence of 'Made in Italy' food products in the Brazilian market.

In preparation for this transition, a delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani visited Brazil on September 9, accompanied by the president of Confindustria and approximately 100 business representatives. During this mission, a bilateral Italy-Brazil working group was established with the Brazilian Trade Minister to address implementation challenges and identify new commercial opportunities.
