EU MiCA Crypto License Deadline Sparks Industry Consolidation

The EU’s Markets in Crypto‑Assets (MiCA) regulation enters its final phase on 1 July 2026, ending a two‑year transition that allowed crypto firms to operate under national rules. From that date, any provider serving EU customers must hold a single MiCA licence, a requirement that is expected to thin the market.  Alexis Sirkia of Yellow Network called the deadline a “new phase of growth” with clearer rules, while Avital Haitovich warned that compliance costs could push liquidity to other jurisdictions and accelerate consolidation.  Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange, is likely to have its EU licence rejected by the Greek regulator, raising concerns about reduced liquidity across the bloc.

In Romania, the deadline will affect roughly 600,000 local crypto investors—twice the number of participants on the national stock exchange.  Ioana Chiper Zah noted that firms must either obtain a MiCA licence or cease serving EU clients, with non‑compliant platforms facing shutdown orders, fines, and loss of banking relationships.  The regulatory shift is prompting venture capital to favour compliant, governance‑focused startups, and analysts anticipate a wave of acquisitions as firms seek to meet the new licensing standards.
