EU Migration and Asylum Pact signed, boosting Cyprus border security

The European Union has adopted a new Migration and Ascent Pact that creates a unified system for external border checks, faster asylum procedures, and stronger mechanisms for returning people who do not qualify for international protection.

Cyprus MEP Luca Foulas said the pact is a major step for the island, which sits on a key migration route. He noted that Frontex recorded a 40 % drop in illegal crossings and the European Commission reported a 35 % decline in unlawful arrivals in the first months of the year.

Domestically, the Cypriot Democratic Rally (DISY) has questioned the opposition AKEL’s vote against the regulation, urging the party to explain its opposition to measures the government has long advocated for to protect Cyprus’ security and migration management.
