EU Migration and Asylum Pact Takes Effect Across Member States

The European Union's Migration and Asylum Pact entered into force on 12 June 2024, after being adopted at the EU summit in May 2024. The agreement revises the EU’s migration‑asylum framework, introducing mandatory registration of irregular migrants, stricter security checks at external borders, and accelerated asylum and return procedures. It also establishes a permanent, binding solidarity mechanism that balances shared responsibility with flexible contributions from member states.

Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the pact provides “a European solution that is effective, fair and robust,” highlighting stronger border protection, fair asylum rules and a 55 % drop in illegal crossings reported since the new measures began. All EU countries, including Albania and Croatia, are now required to implement the new rules in the coming months with continued Commission support.
