EU migration pact takes effect, tightening borders and solidarity

From 12 June 2026 the European Union’s new Migration and Asylum Pact becomes operational, introducing stricter controls at the bloc’s external borders and faster asylum procedures. The package mandates identity and security screening of irregular entrants within seven days at the border (or three days inland) and sets a fast‑track assessment lasting up to 12 weeks for applicants deemed low‑risk or likely to be rejected.

A compulsory EU‑wide solidarity mechanism obliges member states to host a share of asylum seekers or pay €20,000 per person to countries bearing the greatest pressure, notably Greece, Italy and Malta. The pact also creates a permanent funding and operational support framework for frontline states and a crisis‑response tool for large‑scale influxes. Human‑rights organisations have warned that accelerated procedures could extend detention periods and limit access to protection.
