EU Ministers to meet in Dublin to discuss enlargement and accession safeguards

The Irish Presidency of the Council of the European Union will host an informal meeting of European Affairs Ministers in Dublin on September 3 and 4. A primary focus of the summit will be EU enlargement and the discussion of potential safeguards to be included in future accession treaties.

During the first working session on September 4, EU ministers will meet with representatives from nine candidate and potential-candidate countries. These discussions will center on building administrative capacity to help these nations meet EU accession requirements.

In a second session, EU ministers and Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos will address enlargement safeguards ahead of a strategic discussion scheduled for the European Council meeting in October. Other agenda items include the Multiannual Financial Framework for 2028-2034 and strengthening the EU’s democratic resilience.
