EU moves to curb China supply dependence ahead of G7 summit

EU leaders will meet in Brussels after the G7 summit in Évian, France, to discuss measures that would force companies in sensitive sectors to secure at least three sources of critical supplies, reducing reliance on single Chinese suppliers. The proposal targets industries such as automobiles, chemicals, metals and green‑technology, and is part of a broader plan to raise manufacturing’s share of the bloc’s GDP from 14.3% to 20% over the next decade.

The EU is also seeking to strengthen its domestic technology supply chains—including artificial intelligence, data centres, semiconductors and cloud computing—by encouraging the construction of European‑owned data centres and limiting dependence on U.S. cloud providers. With China posting a record €360 billion goods surplus with the EU last year, the bloc views reducing this imbalance as essential to protecting its strategic industries.
