EU nations propose common windfall tax on oil companies
Six European Union member states, led by Germany, are pushing for a common EU-wide windfall tax on large oil companies. The initiative aims to capture extraordinary profits generated by energy market volatility to fund support measures for households and businesses struggling with rising energy costs.
Spanish Secretary of State for Energy, Joan Groizard, has advocated for a unified European response rather than individual national taxes. He warned that unilateral national measures could risk fragmenting the EU internal market. Groizard noted that implementing such taxes at a national level can be difficult due to the parliamentary majorities required, emphasizing that a community-level solution is more effective for maintaining market cohesion.
