EU naval forces board suspected Russian shadow fleet tanker MV SUN
European Union naval forces, operating under the EUNAVFOR MED IRINI mission, boarded the oil tanker MV SUN in the Mediterranean Sea on August 30. The operation, conducted by the Italian Navy vessel ITS Paolo Thaon di Revel, was a flag-verification mission carried out under Article 110 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. The vessel is suspected of sailing under a false flag to evade international sanctions.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas stated that the MV SUN is the sixth suspected vessel from Russia’s “shadow fleet” to be intercepted by EU operations in recent months. Kallas emphasized that illegal oil sales from these ships serve as a critical financial lifeline for Russia’s war in Ukraine. The shadow fleet consists of vessels with opaque ownership and frequent flag changes used to bypass Western sanctions on Russian oil exports.
This enforcement action follows a mechanism adopted by the EU in July that allows member states to confiscate and sell Russian oil transported by such vessels. Russian President Vladimir Putin has condemned these actions as “piracy and robbery,” warning that Russia will respond in kind to the seizure of its commercial ships. EU defense ministers are scheduled to meet in Ireland to discuss further measures against the shadow fleet.
