EU observers report freedom restrictions in Zambia elections

The European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) reported that while Zambia’s general elections were largely calm and orderly, the process was marred by restrictions on fundamental freedoms and unfair competition. Mission head Michael McNamara noted that last-minute legislative changes, legal uncertainty, and unequal campaign conditions distorted the electoral field.

Observers highlighted several democratic concerns, including restrictions on campaign activities for presidential candidates and instances of violence against party supporters. State media showed a pronounced bias toward the government, while new cybersecurity laws contributed to increased self-censorship on social media and traditional platforms.

Operational challenges were also documented, such as delays in opening polling stations, overcrowding, and difficulties during the counting process. The mission specifically noted significant accessibility barriers, stating that only 41% of observed polling stations were accessible to people with reduced mobility. Additionally, women were significantly under-represented, making up only 9% of candidates.

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) is continuing the vote count following a temporary suspension caused by violence against election officials in certain districts.
