EU officials call for unified rail ticketing at Innotrans
At the opening of the Innotrans trade fair in Berlin, EU Transport Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas emphasized the need for unified railway ticketing to facilitate cross-border travel within Europe. The goal is to enable a ‘one journey, one booking’ system where passengers can view all available options online. A proposal from the European Commission suggests that major ticketing platforms should be required to offer tickets from various operators to improve accessibility.
German Federal Minister of Transport Steffen Bilger criticized the current progress of rail network renovations in Germany. He stated that the ‘corridor renovation’ concept has not yet met high expectations, noting that long-term closures of tracks must result in significantly better functionality. Due to delays and ongoing operational issues, Deutsche Bahn is currently revising its strategy and timeline for the large-scale renovation of over 40 high-traffic corridors originally planned through the mid-2030s.
