Google signs EU AI Act transparency code as new AI rules take effect
Google announced that it has signed the European Union’s Code of Practice on Transparency of AI‑Generated Content, joining other major platforms in committing to the EU AI Act’s Article 50 requirements. The company will deploy its SynthID watermarking technology to embed imperceptible, machine‑readable marks in AI‑generated images, audio, video and text, allowing users and regulators to verify the synthetic origin of content.
The EU Commission has published final guidelines for Article 50, which will become legally binding on 2 August 2026. Under the rules, chat‑bots and other interactive AI systems must clearly inform users they are interacting with AI, and all deep‑fake or AI‑generated media must carry a detectable label. Existing systems have a four‑month transition window, with a final compliance deadline of 2 December 2026. Non‑compliance can attract fines of up to €15 million or 3 % of worldwide annual turnover.
Google’s signing comes shortly before the obligations start, positioning the firm to meet the new transparency standards while voicing concerns that layered regulatory demands could affect competitiveness and user experience.
