EU Packaging Regulation 2026 Introduces New Standards for Industry, Consumers
From August 2026, the European Union’s Packaging Regulation will become mandatory, tightening the circular‑economy obligations for all secondary packaging used in industry and retail. Companies must demonstrate the environmental performance of their packaging through Life‑Cycle Assessment (LCA) in line with ISO 14040/44, and many will need to shift toward recyclable materials such as full‑grade cardboard to meet the new carbon‑footprint criteria.
The rule also changes the definition of a “packaging producer”. Businesses that previously only sold packaged goods – for example garden‑centre operators that assemble plant trays – may now be classified as producers and will be required to label packages more clearly, keep detailed documentation of the volumes placed on the market, and ensure proper recycling pathways. While the appearance of products such as potted plants will stay the same for shoppers, new markings on boxes and trays are expected, and the responsibility for compliance shifts further down the supply chain. The regulation aims to improve material recovery, reduce fossil resource use, and give consumers clearer information for proper disposal.
