EU packaging rule does not ban water bottle packs from August

French MEP Virginie Joron (Rassemblement National) posted on X that the European Union’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) would ban the sale of multi‑pack water bottles from 12 August, warning that “Brussels will force you to carry your water bottles one by one”. The post sparked criticism and speculation about how retailers would handle single bottles.

In reality, the PPWR, adopted by the European Parliament in February 2025, targets the reduction of hazardous substances in packaging and aims to minimise overall packaging waste. The provisions effective on 12 August concern only chemical limits for packaging materials in contact with food. The rule that limits the number of packs applies from 1 January 2030 and includes an explicit exemption for packaging necessary for transport, meaning current water‑bottle packs remain allowed.
