EU packaging waste rules set for August 2026 spark industry demand for two‑year postponement

The European Union’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) will become fully applicable on 12 August 2026. Industry representatives in the Czech Republic and broader EU have asked the European Commission to postpone implementation by two years, arguing that essential implementing acts are still missing. Advisory firm CIRA warns that many companies are already ill‑prepared, often mis‑identifying their role in the supply chain, exposing themselves to fees and compliance gaps, and relying on vague eco‑claims that will soon be banned.

The regulation aims to cut packaging waste, phase out certain single‑use items, and prohibit the use of PFAS “forever chemicals” in food‑contact packaging. It also requires manufacturers to reduce unnecessary material and empty space in pack‑aging. From February 2027, consumers in the EU will be allowed to bring their own containers for take‑away food and drinks without extra charges. Similar provisions will affect Croatia, targeting small sauce sachets, hotel‑room cosmetics and other disposable items, encouraging reusable alternatives and stricter recycling targets.
