European Parliament adopts sweeping air‑passenger rights overhaul
The European Parliament approved new air‑passenger rights rules after 13 years of negotiations. The legislation bans hidden charges, requires airlines to include hand‑baggage fees in the displayed ticket price and keeps the three‑hour delay compensation right – €250 for flights up to 1 500 km, €400 for 1 500‑3 500 km and €600 for longer routes.
Airlines must inform passengers of their rights within four days of a flight and provide the necessary claim forms. Compensation must be paid within 30 days or a clear explanation offered, with passengers having nine months to submit a claim. The rules also protect families and vulnerable travelers: children under 14 cannot be separated from a guardian, and no extra fees are charged for seat‑selection errors or for parents sitting together.
MEPs highlighted the consumer‑focus of the changes. Nikolina Brnjac said the aim was “transparent pricing and equal conditions for all airlines,” while Christel Schaldemose stressed that the measures will make ticket costs and rights “more understandable for millions of European travelers.” The package is expected to affect airlines operating across the EU and its EEA partners.
