EU Parliament rejects soy biodiesel risk rule, Argentine exports safe

The European Parliament voted against a proposal by the European Commission to amend Regulation 807 and label Argentine soy oil as a high‑risk feedstock for biodiesel due to indirect land‑use change (ILUC). The rejection means Argentina can continue exporting soy‑based biodiesel to the EU, its only open market for the product.

Industry bodies welcomed the outcome. Gustavo Idígoras, president of the Argentine Oilseed Industry Chamber (CIARA), said the decision removed an unjustified barrier and reflected successful public‑private cooperation. Luis Zubizarreta, head of the Argentine Biofuels Chamber (Carbio), called the move unprecedented and highlighted that Argentine soybean area has not expanded. The EU Commission must now revise the regulation and a delegation of Argentine producers is set to discuss new wording in Brussels.

The Argentine government also praised the vote, noting that technical reports demonstrated the sustainability of its soy production and that the decision provides predictability for a key export sector.
