EU Parliamentarian Warns of Legal Repression Over Arrests of Serbian Officials

European Parliament member Vladimir Prebilič said that detaining political officials for taking part in informational talks constitutes legal repression and creates discomfort for those injured by the March 15 sound‑cannon attack in Belgrade. He told N1 TV that the upcoming EU Parliament resolution on Serbia, scheduled for a July vote, will be adopted separately from resolutions on other EU accession candidates. Prebilič noted that the Serbian authorities have been informed about the pressure on officials and that the EU delegation head in Serbia, Andreas von Bekerat, should also intervene.

He criticised the Serbian government's actions as undermining free expression and questioned whether Serbia remains a democratic community. Prebilič said recent hearings on the sound‑cannon incident and other political interviews will not be included in the new resolution, and he mentioned speculation about President Aleksandar Vučić’s possible resignation, stating that any decision rests with Vučić himself.
