EU parliamentary chief says Serbia faces double standards in accession talks

Lucas Furlaš, chair of the European Parliament’s delegation to Serbia, said the EU is applying double standards to Belgrade and attempting to block every positive step the country takes toward EU membership. He argued that the obstruction is not due to unmet accession criteria but to political decisions by some members of the Parliament.

Furlaš highlighted the inconsistency of demanding Serbia recognise Kosovo – a condition required for accession – while several EU member states still do not recognise Kosovo. He questioned the EU’s approach toward Turkey and noted that the same principle should apply to Ukraine and Moldova. The delegate warned that divergent treatment could create a “two‑speed Europe” with unequal rights and obligations, undermining regional cohesion. He called for a uniform, law‑based assessment of candidate countries and pledged to continue working to keep Serbia’s European perspective alive.
