EU pledges support to Spain for rapid migrant returns in Ceuta

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has pledged continued support for Spain to ensure the rapid return of migrants currently in Ceuta. This follows a mass influx of people from Morocco in July.

In a letter to EU leaders ahead of a summit where migration is a key agenda item, von der Leyen noted that the crisis demonstrates how sudden, massive arrivals can pressure the European Union’s external borders. She stated that effective migration management requires constant vigilance, sustained solidarity, and adaptability.

To address these challenges, Brussels is negotiating a new agreement with Morocco aimed at strengthening cooperation regarding border management, the prevention of irregular departures, and the return of migrants.
