European Union vows to defend International Criminal Court against Trump
The European Union has announced its intention to defend the International Criminal Court (ICC) following calls from US President Donald Trump for the institution's dissolution. Speaking at the UN General Assembly in New York, EU Council President António Costa stated that defending international law is a responsibility and that threats against the court and its staff are unacceptable.
During his address to the UN, President Trump urged all member states to immediately withdraw from the ICC, describing it as a ‘scrupulous institution’. The United States has previously accused the court of being politically motivated and has implemented sanctions against its officials. The ICC, which has 125 member states and has been active since 2002, is not recognized by the US, Israel, Russia, or Turkey.
Recent tensions involving the ICC have been heightened by an arrest warrant issued for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
