EU prepares major sanctions on Russian military industry amid Baltic tensions

European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has announced plans for the most extensive sanctions package to date targeting the Russian military industry. The measures aim to restrict Russian access to essential components sourced from Europe, Asia, and North America to hinder weapons production.

In addition to sanctions, Kallas urged member states to transfer or sell near-end-of-life Patriot missile systems to Ukraine to bolster its air defenses. This proposal highlights the ongoing effort to protect civilian infrastructure, though it raises questions regarding the defensive readiness of NATO's eastern flank.

Concurrently, tensions in the Baltic Sea region have escalated following warnings from Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova. She stated that Russia would provide a “destructive response” to actions deemed escalatory or hostile by Moscow, particularly regarding the strengthening of NATO's presence in the region following the accession of Finland and Sweden.
