The 8 August 1956 fire at the Bois du Cazier mine in Marcinelle, Belgium, killed 262 workers of 12 nationalities, including 136 Italians. Seventy years later, Italian towns such as Salice Salentino and the province of Trapani hold commemorations, remembering the three local miners who perished.

The European Commission, represented by Vice‑President Roxana Minzatu, has announced a proposal to designate 8 August as a European Day of Commemoration of Victims of Work Accidents. The initiative follows calls from the European Parliament and member states and aims to reinforce prevention and safety standards across the EU, where more than 3,000 workers die each year and about 170,000 suffer occupational illnesses.

Italian trade‑union leader Michele Pagliaro highlighted that around 130‑140 thousand Italians still emigrate annually, 67.2 % without a university degree, and warned that unsafe work conditions persist. Inca and Cgil are organising two days of events in Marcinelle on 7‑8 August, unveiling a restored monument and publishing a commemorative volume.
