Ursula von der Leyen faces EPPO investigation over Pfizer vaccine deals

The European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) is investigating European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen regarding her negotiations for COVID-19 vaccines with Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla. The probe, often referred to as ‘Pfizergate’, was taken over from Belgian authorities in 2024.

Legal documents indicate that prosecutors are examining allegations of corruption, conflict of interest, interference in public functions, and the destruction of SMS messages. Despite the ongoing inquiry, von der Leyen has not yet provided an in-person statement to the EPPO.

In response, European Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier stated that the institution has cooperated extensively with the EPPO and that von der Leyen supports these efforts within the limits of her official duties.

Outgoing EPPO Chief Prosecutor Laura Codruța Kövesi noted that her office has faced difficulties when high-ranking officials or influential individuals have refused to respond to summons, stating, ‘Some politicians think they are above the law.’
