EU grants €846 million to Spain for Valencia flood recovery

The European Commission has unlocked €846 million from the EU Solidarity Fund to support the reconstruction of Spain’s Comunitat Valenciana after the October 2024 dana that caused 230 deaths and extensive damage. The payment adds to a €100 million advance already released in March 2025, bringing total EU assistance to €946 million.

Funds will be used to repair critical infrastructure such as roads, bridges and water‑energy networks, provide temporary accommodation for displaced residents, carry out large‑scale clean‑up and decontamination, and strengthen flood‑prevention systems, including drainage and early‑warning mechanisms. The aid also covers the preservation of cultural heritage sites.

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said, “Las inundaciones de Valencia fueron una tragedia europea” and described the disbursement as a concrete expression of European solidarity with Spain. In Spain, Minister Ángel Víctor Torres chaired an inter‑ministerial commission to review urgent measures and prepare for a joint meeting with the Generalitat Valenciana on the recovery effort.
