EU renewable power expansion hindered by grid limits and slow wind growth
The European Climate Neutrality Observatory reports that the EU's deployment of solar and wind power is progressing too slowly to meet its 2030 climate target. Variable renewables accounted for about 30% of the electricity mix in 2025, but the Union aims for 58% by 2030. In 2024 roughly 70 GW of new renewable capacity was added, dominated by solar (57.5 GW) while wind capacity fell by about 2 GW, reducing the overall generation increase. The report cites grid investment shortfalls, lengthy permitting procedures, insufficient battery storage and smart‑meter rollout, as well as a growing dependence on China for critical clean‑tech components, as key obstacles.
Separately, ENTSO‑E released a technical report in collaboration with WindEurope recommending measures to detect and analyse forced oscillations caused by inverter‑based generation. The non‑binding guidance supports the forthcoming Network Code on Requirements for Connection to the Grid of Generators (NC RfG 2.0) and draws on case studies from several wind farms. ENTSO‑E plans to use the findings as a basis for future implementation guidelines to improve system stability across the European power network.
