EU repatriation rule sparks protests and UN rights criticism

The European Union approved a new repatriation regulation in Strasbourg that allows the removal of asylum seekers to designated third‑country centers. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk warned that the rule could breach the principle of non‑refoulement, especially where “return centres” are set up in countries such as Albania that lack sufficient guarantees and monitoring.

Mass protests have erupted in Germany and Albania, with citizens and civil‑rights groups opposing the plan to forcefully return Afghan nationals to Taliban‑controlled Afghanistan. Demonstrators argue the policy violates international refugee law and raises security and diplomatic concerns, given the EU does not formally recognize the Taliban regime.

Türk called for a reassessment of the EU scheme, urging member states to ensure any transfers are based on individual risk assessments and to prioritize legal, safe pathways for migrants rather than blanket expulsions.
