EU requires flashing emergency brake lights on all new cars by July 2026

From 7 July 2026, every newly registered vehicle in the European Union must be equipped with an Emergency Stop Signal (ESS). When the car detects an emergency braking manoeuvre, the rear lights flash rapidly (about four times per second) and remain active until the critical deceleration ends. The ESS replaces the conventional steady‑red brake light for such events, providing a clearer visual cue to drivers behind and aiming to reduce rear‑end collisions.

The requirement is part of the EU’s broader vehicle‑safety regulations that align with UN technical standards. It applies to all new models sold in the EU; there is no retrofit obligation for existing cars. The measure is low‑cost, relying on software and existing sensor data, but is expected to improve reaction times and overall road safety across member states.
