EU Right-to-Repair Law Enforced, Boosting Local Repair Cafés

From 1 October 2024 the European Union’s right‑to‑repair directive becomes legally binding. Manufacturers of appliances, televisions and smartphones must make devices repairable, provide spare parts for 7‑10 years after production, and offer repairs at a reasonable price or for free. The obligation applies beyond the standard two‑year warranty and also covers products bought before 1 October 2026.

Volunteer‑run repair cafés are already helping consumers. In Esslingen, Germany, a weekly Repair Café offers free fixes for clothing, electronics and small appliances, while in Vienna, Austria, the Repair Team Wien repairs household devices and reports a 77 % success rate. Austrian appliance maker BSH, which performs about 65 000 repairs annually, welcomes the law as it supports durability and jobs.
