EU Right‑to‑Repair Directive Enforced from July 31 2026

From 31 July 2026 all European Union member states must transpose Directive 2024/1799, giving consumers a legal right to have covered goods repaired even after the statutory warranty expires. The rule obliges manufacturers of items such as refrigerators, washing machines, dishwashers, televisions, smartphones and tablets to provide repair services at a reasonable price and within a reasonable time, unless the product cannot be fixed.

A standardized European repair information sheet must be presented before any work, detailing the type of repair, cost, duration and any replacement product offered. An online platform for repair offers is to be launched by 2027. Repairs may be charged for parts, labour and transport, but fees cannot be used to discourage consumers from requesting service. The directive targets the reduction of waste and the curb of planned obsolescence, but does not cover every consumer product.
