EU rolls out Euro 7 emission standards for cars and electric vehicles

The European Union has adopted the Euro 7 emission regulation, which will begin applying to new passenger cars and light vans (categories M1 and N1) on 29 November 2026. The requirements will extend to all new vehicles of those categories from 29 November 2027, with heavier trucks and buses facing later deadlines in 2028‑2029.

Euro 7 sets limits of 3 mg km⁻¹ for pure‑electric cars, 7 mg km⁻¹ for most combustion‑engine vehicles and 11 mg km⁻¹ for large vans. It also introduces limits on particulate matter released from tyre wear and brake dust, and imposes minimum durability criteria for traction batteries in electric and plug‑in hybrid cars. The rule aims to improve air quality, support the EU’s zero‑emission mobility goals and replace the earlier Euro 6 standards.

The regulation is part of the EU’s Sustainable and Intelligent Mobility Strategy and follows a political agreement reached in December 2023, with the final act published in April 2024 (Regulation 2024/1257).
