EU says Pope Leo's AI vision mirrors its technology rules

The European Commission told EWTN News that Pope Leo XIV’s call for AI to serve human dignity and the common good reflects principles already embedded in the EU’s AI regulatory framework. Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier said, “We could not agree more with the vision of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV and with the need for a robust legal framework for AI,” adding that “What the Pope describes is what Europe is already doing.” The comments came as the European Parliament approved amendments postponing some high‑risk AI obligations under the AI Act, citing the need for regulatory certainty while standards are finalised. Both the commission and MEP Michael McNamara stressed that core safeguards – human‑in‑the‑loop, fundamental‑rights protections and bans on exploitative AI – remain in place.
