EU seeks fast-track approval for Airbus-Leonardo-Thales satellite venture

The European Union is working toward fast-tracking antitrust approval for Project Bromo, a satellite joint venture between Airbus SE, Leonardo SpA, and Thales SA. Positioned as a European response to SpaceX, the initiative aims to reduce the continent's dependence on American satellite providers.

EU officials expect a formal application within the coming weeks. Over the past year, discussions have focused on resolving potential competition concerns before the official filing. The project will serve as a test for a revised EU merger approach designed to support regional companies in competing with US and Chinese entities. While European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has praised the project as a potential European champion, Competition Commissioner Teresa Ribera noted that approval is not automatic.

The venture seeks to integrate satellite manufacturing and space system services. This move aligns with broader European space strategies, such as the IRIS² communication satellite system, which aims to provide secure government and commercial connectivity.
