EU Solar Power Share Tops 20% for Three Consecutive Months

Solar photovoltaics supplied more than 20% of the European Union's electricity demand in May, June and July 2026, according to Energy‑Charts data compiled by the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE. The EU average rose from about 18% a year earlier to 20.3% in May, 21.1% in June and 21.5% in July.

Latvia set a new record with solar covering 49% of its electricity demand in June. Germany saw its solar share exceed 30% for three straight months – 30.3% in May, 30.4% in June and a provisional 31.6% in July – up from roughly 22.6% in the same period a year earlier. Switzerland also broke the 25% threshold each month, and Austria reported new highs.

The data highlight a rapid expansion of photovoltaic capacity across the EU, with the sector’s contribution to the power mix rising steadily.
