EU sunflower production projected to rise amid shifting oilseed markets
Agricultural reports indicate shifting trends in oilseed production and pricing. In Hungary, sunflower yields are estimated at 1.75 million tons, with producer prices for high-oleic varieties rising 4% to 210,400 HUF per ton compared to the previous year. Conversely, rapeseed production reached 406,000 tons, but prices fell approximately 4% below last year's levels. Wheat and corn prices also show downward or stable trends, suggesting a period of compressed margins for producers.
On a broader European scale, the European Commission forecasts that EU sunflower production could exceed 9.5 million tons by 2026, marking a potential 9% increase from the previous season. This growth is driven by expanded sowing areas and improved yields. Romania is expected to remain the EU's leading producer with roughly 2.2 million tons, followed by Bulgaria. Germany is also seeing significant expansion, with sunflower cultivation areas reaching a record 98,000 hectares.
