EU tightens steel import rules as quotas shrink and tariffs rise, China in focus

The European Union announced tighter rules for steel imports to counter inexpensive competition from Asia, with import quotas set to shrink. The move aims to curb cheaper steel entering the bloc and strengthen domestic producers.

The measures include doubling steel tariffs and sharply restricting imports beyond the quotas, with shipments beyond the quota facing a 50% tariff.

The policy targets cheap Asian steel, notably from China, as part of a broader effort to shield the European steel industry.
